Julie Costello Hook Oregon's only USEA certified level 5 instructor
Born 1949, Monterey, CA, Julie grew up riding with the Pebble Beach Pony Club, under the direction of the late Dick Collins. She Evented a variety of horses in '60's and early '70's, through Preliminary three-day level, in addition to drag hunting with the Los Altos Hunt, playing polo, vaulting, and showing in Dressage and Hunter/Jumper shows and Hunt race meets. Julie achieved her "A" rating in Pony Club in 1969, and served as a national examiner for several years after that. Having started teaching in her teens in pony club, she taught at, and later operated the summer camps at Pebble Beach. While attending college at UCD, she taught and competed for Happy Horse Riding School and worked summers at Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. Duties in addition to teaching included serving as show secretary for the Pebble Beach Three Day Event and Summer Horse Show, as well as helping to organize and design courses.
After marrying Malcolm Hook in 1972, they moved to the Pacific Northwest to operate the Lake Oswego Hunt Club, where Julie taught Eventers, as well as Hunters and Jumpers, and Malcolm managed the barn and organized a large H/J show annually.
Since 1979 she and her husband have operated their own boarding and training facility, Talisman Farm, located at Continental Farm in Aurora, OR for the past three decades. She has coached riders to the Three Star level in Eventing and Intermediare in Dressage, as well as teaching beginners of all ages in riding and vaulting.
Julie is a founding member of the Oregon Combined Training Association, and served as its president for five years. She has also served on the Board of Governors of the United States Eventing Association, and is currently co-chairman of its Membership Committee. In 2008, she received her Level Five Certification in the USEA Instructor's Certification Program.
